内容简介:

In their fascinating investigation of the ways we handle money, Gary Belsky and Thomas Gilovich reveal the psychological forces -- the patterns of thinking and decision making -- behind seemingly irrational behavior. They explain why so many otherwise savvy people make foolish financial choices: why investors are too quick to sell winning stocks and too slow to sell losing shares, why home sellers leave money on the table and home buyers don't get the biggest bang for their buck, why borrowers pay too much credit card interest and savers can't sock away as much as they'd like, and why so many of us can't control our spending. Focusing on the decisions we make every day, Belsky and Gilovich provide invaluable guidance for avoiding the financial faux pas that can cost thousands of dollars each year.

Filled with fresh insight; practical advice; and lively, illustrative anecdotes, this book gives you the tools you need to harness the powerful science of behavioral economics in any financial environment.

The bigness bias

Meet Jill and John, twenty-one-year-old twins who just graduated from college. Jill, immediately upon entering the workforce, began contributing $50 a month to a stock mutual fund and continued to do so for the next eight years, until she got married and found more pressing uses for her money. John, who married his college sweetheart immediately upon graduating and soon after started a family, didn\'t start investing until he was twenty-nine. Then he, too, contributed $50 a month to the same stock fund, and he continued doing so for thirty-seven years until he retired at age sixty-five. All told, John invested $22,200 while Jill contributed just $4,800. At age sixty-five, which of the two siblings had the most money assuming they earned an average of 10 percent a year?

We've already explained that how you view a decision-as a matter of selection or rejection-can profoundly influence your ultirmate choice. So a person deciding among several laptops might choose differently if she viewed her task as deciding which not to buy-causing her to focus on the negative qualities of each-than shen would if she viewed her mission as deciding which one to purchase, leading her to focus on the positives. Now we're set to explain a related set of behavioral ecnommic tendencies that can also greatly affect your decisions. Although subtly varied, these habits or inclinations share a common result: They lead people to make financial decisions based on inaccurate or incomplete information.

One is "anchoring", or the clining to a fact or figure or idea that may or may not ...

The old wisdom about first impressions-that they're so important because you never get a second chnage to make one-is even truer than most of us realized.
